What is color temperature in lighting and why does it matter?

Color temperature, measured in Kelvins defines the warmth or coolness of lighting. Warm lighting will be between 2700K to 3000K, neutral lighting 3500k to 4000k, and cool lighting will be between 5000k to 6500k.
Choosing the right color temperature is about finding the right balance of lighting for the mood of your space.
Warm lighting
For warm and inviting ambiance like your bedroom, living room or dining area 2700k to 3000k is ideal.
Cool lighting Whereas study areas, offices, kitchens, require concentration - as such, cooler lighting around 4000k to 5000k will be better for higher visibility.
Neutral lighting Retail shops and showrooms will use neutral tones like 3500k to 5000k. It attracts attention and highlights the products.
Similar to ambient, task, and accent lighting, color temperatures can be layered and to elevate the atmosphere of the area. For instance, your living room can have warm ambiance lighting, neutral task lighting by the sofa, and cooler accent lighting for art pieces you would want on display.
